Kaisen finds familiar stop on ‘Camelot’ schedule

By David Burke | Sunday, March 18, 2007

Since the beginning of February, Davenport native Brian Kaisen’s life has been a routine of packing and unpacking suitcases, makeup, costumes, performing and “then just sort of rinse and repeat,” he said.

Kaisen is in the middle of his first Broadway tour with a production of the musical “Camelot.”

“It’s fun being in a different place every day, but it does get tiring with just the sheer schedule of it,” he said in a telephone interview from New York.

That schedule will get a familiar name on it Saturday night when the tour stops at the RiverCenter/Adler Theatre in downtown Davenport.

“I know I’ve been to the Adler, but I can’t remember if I played on the stage,” Kaisen, 25, said.

He plays Dap, Lancelot’s squire, in one scene of the musical and is a townsperson in the ensemble.

Kaisen was active in show choir and musicals at Davenport North, where he graduated in 2000, but didn’t consider performing as a career until his sophomore or junior year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“Music and performing was always a big part of my existence growing up,” he said. “Through my work in college, I thought, ‘Huh, I may actually want to do this.’ ”

His credits include playing Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast” at Theatre Unlimited in Wisconsin, as well as Romeo in “Romeo and Juliet” and Conrad in “Ordinary People,” both produced by the former Ghostlight Theatre.

“I enjoy the aspect of creating a character and taking on a personality and interacting with people on stage, telling a story like that,” he said.

Entering an admittedly risky field, Kaisen said he enjoys the frustrations and anxiety of looking for the next job.

“It’s always a process of improving yourself and improving your material and looking for the next thing and where you want to go in your path,” he said. “I feel like you’re always working toward something.”

Once “Camelot” ends its tour in early April, the rest of Kaisen’s 2007 is set. He’ll be a performer at the Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee, Ind., in the heart of Amish country. He’ll have roles in its resident production, “Plain and Fancy,” as well as playing Clem Rogers in “The Will Rogers Follies” and a role as the onstage pianist and musical director of “Pump Boys and Dinettes.”
